The Best Granola Bars?

Consumer Reports has just come out with a free analysis of cereal and granola bars. They tested sixteen granola bars and the one they would most recommend is Nature's Path Organic FlaxPlus Pumpkin.

They say it tastes better than the other granola bars. It also has more fiber and omega-3's and less sodium. There are no preservatives or additives in this product.

The ingredients in order of weight are organic rolled oats, organic brown rice flour, partially polished organic brown rice syrup, organic invert cane syrup, organic evaporated cane juice, organic pumpkin seeds, organic expeller pressed canola oil and/or organic soybean oil, organic flax seeds, organic acacia gums, organic honey, natural spice and flavors, sea salt, organic molasses and rice extract.

You can get five of these bars at Amazon for about $3.35. I think we'll be seeing a lot more granola bars offering flax seed as a central ingredient in the near future.

Buying 50 Pounds of Flaxseed Online

There are several online sites from which you can now buy bulk flax seed. Fifty pound bags are surprisingly popular. Hopefully this means flaxseed is becoming increasingly popular as a staple in industrial kitchens, bakeries and school and office cafeterias.

It would have been inconceivable to me a few years ago to imagine that Amazon (the big online book company) would one day be flogging 50 pound bags of flaxseed. But it's true you can even buy flaxseed on Amazon now. The bag shown here costs $89 plus only $5 for shipping anywhere in the U.S. There is no gift wrapping option available for this purchase ;-).

If anyone knows some other alternatives to high quality flaxseed sold in bulk online, please leave your comment below.
