Specialty supplements containing flax lignans saw a growth of over eight percent in 2004 over the previous year according to NUTRA USA.
Flaxseed is a rich source of plant lignans. Many positive studies have been published saying that enterolactone (which the colon creates from plant lignans) promotes prostrate health, healthy bones, breast health, heart health, and lesser menopause symptoms. This is helping to drive increased demand for plant lignans.
The most popular flax lignan supplement on the market today is Acatris' SDG. But according to NUTRA USA, their dominance of the market is being challenged by a company called Linnea. Linnea is producing plant lignans from Norway spruce bark. Between 10 to 40mg of their HMRlignan is claimed to increase the enterolactone level by the same amount as three tablespoons of unground flax seed.
